____ Romero, 6. I need to name her and have lost steam.
Vero spent her childhood outdoors, which sounds great in theory but was actually torment for an intellectual young girl who would have much preferred to not be roasting alive in the hot Texan sun. Responsible from the get-go, she was the one her parents turned to for babysitting, the one her gaggle of siblings went to for a quick hug and a bandaid when they were hurt, the one who never did anything reckless or wrong because her parents were burnt out enough between working full time and trying to raise their children.
Really, it was no surprise that Veronica slipped through the cracks. Determined to be as least of a problem as possible finally bit her in the ass when she was in middle school and a teacher noticed that not only was she overperforming in absolutely everything, but that she had never been evaluated for educational support due to her bright nature. It was suggested that she be homeschooled, which for sure was not happening due to the hectic nature of her home life, and with her parents divorcing? Yeah, there was no way.
Carlos and Genesis did what they could to support their growing family-- they each found an apartment and the kids stayed in the family home with their parents switching out weekly rather than uprooting everyone, and Vero was grateful for it. It gave her the stability to focus on school, which she finished early, begin working, which she did under the table and far too much of, and she started college at eighteen, studying aeronautical engineering. She didn't know what she wanted to do, but working with her hands and solving problems had always appealed to the young woman. While she obtained scholarships, she continued to work, waitressing on the side and interning at the NASA facility in Houston in the meantime. The internship lead to being hired to work on various teams at Lockheed Martin in design and development, and her passion for creating was so evident that it was only natural that it drew attention.
When she was first approached about uprooting her whole life at 25, she laughed and brushed it off. Her youngest sister was just starting high school, and she couldn't imagine leaving home. But as time went on and the subject was occasionally broached, she couldn't help but wonder if there was more she could be doing. When she was offered a position next, she took it, packing up her life and heading to the UK.
Which is where she's been since. It's been an adventure, and the life she was so scared she wouldn't be able to love is actually one she loves.
